DATONG, China— Immerse-style travel and local folklore activities became the highlights of tourism consumption during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. Datong’s tourism market boasted a rich cultural atmosphere, with multiple scenic spots introducing special cultural activities and extending their opening hours. According to the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, eight key monitored attractions received a total of 359,900 tourists, reflecting high-growth, orderly, and booming holiday travel.
At theYungang Grottoes, crowds of tourists enjoyed the ancient caves, took photos at popular "influential spots," and visited art exhibitions to experience thousands of years of cultural heritage. String music performances were added to the Shantang Shuidian area and Cave 3, creating an immersive cultural ambiance. The site also offered cave rubbings and intangible cultural heritage experiences to enrich visitor engagement.
At Mount Heng, tourists followed the traditional custom of climbing high during the festival.Huayan Templelaunched Dragon Boat Festival-themed study tours, where children made colorful paper dragons to learn about folk culture. The site also hosted bucket arch (Douong) puzzle challenges, letting participants experience the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture.
Datong Ancient Citywas packed with tourists exploring the streets and lanes. The cultural show "Encounter the Dragon Boat Festival, Enjoy Colorful Pingcheng" kicked off at Guandi Temple Square, treating both locals and tourists to vibrant dance, vocal, and instrumental performances. Major cultural venues combined folk traditions, folk arts, and family activities into new interactive scenes, helping children understand the festival through fun, hands-on creation.
Rural tourismalso went viral, drawing crowds to quiet forests and clear waters. The Great Wall No. 1 Tourism Highway connected scenic sights into a scenic drive, attracting road-trippers to admire the grand Great Wall and enjoy Datong's regional charm. Villages like Dongshawo, Xishawo, and Yujiazhai in Yunzhou District became hot spots for camping, stove-brewing tea, barbecuing, and hosting parties. Meanwhile, Huata and Shangxiayanhe in Lingqiu, Shenxi and Donghulutou in Hunyuan, and Baiyang and Jianxi in Guangling became the top choices for people looking to slow down and enjoy outdoor family time.
